Subaru 1976-77 Station Wagon Drive Axle Repair Guide

DESCRIPTION 
The rear axle assembly of the 4WD vehicle is a hypoid type with integral carrier housing. The pinion bearing preload adjustment is made by a selective spacer and washer. The differential side bearing preload and the pinion depth adjustments are made by shims.
Drive power is transmitted to the rear axle by ball spline type driveshafts with universal joints at both ends.
AXLE RATIO & IDENTIFICATION
All 4WD vehicles use one basic type of rear axle assembly. To determine axle ratio, divide number of ring gear teeth by number of pinion teeth.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
AXLE SHAFT & BEARINGS
Removal - 1) Raise and support the vehicle. Apply parking brake or lock the front wheels with wheel blocks. Remove wheel, then loosen the axle nut, while applying foot brake.
2) Using chisel, relieve the staked portion of the axle nut. Apply oil around the thread and groove of the axle shaft. Back off axle nut approximately .24" (6 mm), then tighten nut to original position. Repeat this operation several times so chips fall into shaft groove.
3) Disconnect drive shaft (rear) from rear axle companion flange. Apply foot brake and remove nut securing companion flange to spindle. CAUTION - Do not unstake this nut as the use of chisel will damage the spindle thread. Take off companion flange.
4) Remove brake drum, spindle, outer seal, and bearing unit. Remove axle nut from spindle. Remove brake drum and outer seal. Press bearing from spindle.
5) Unlock link nut, then using suitable wrench (925350000), remove link nut and pull out inner seal. Using suitable press, remove inner and outer bearing race and bearing spacer from trailing arm housing.
Installation - 1) Using suitable bearing installation tool (925310000), press bearing inner race onto spindle until it reaches flange. Fit inner spacer and other bearing inner race into spindle. Apply grease to each bearing.
2) Place outer side of trailing arm housing on a "V" block. Mount outer bearing race on suitable bearing installation tool (925310000) and press bearing into housing until seated. Fit outer spacer into housing, then press outer race of bearing (mounted on tool) into housing until seated.
3) Fit collar to housing and press until it touches outer race of bearing.
4) Apply grease on the outer spacer (installed in housing), then fit spindle to housing from outside. Place outer side of housing on "V" block. Use adequate means to prevent spindle from dropping.

5) Apply grease to oil seal lip and mount seal on the "I" marked side of suitable tool (925340000). Place tool and seal into housing and press down until seal is stopped by collar
6) Turn trailing arm housing over in "V" block. Repeat operation for the other oil sea, using the "O" marked end of the tool, and pressing seal into housing until seated.
7) Install remaining components in the reverse order of removal, noting the following: Tighten all nuts to specifications. 
NOTE - Apply foot brake while tightening nuts. Bleed brakes.
DRIVE SHAFTS
Removal & Installation - Raise vehicle and support on safety stands. Disconnect drive shaft from axle shaft companion flange. Remove differential side yoke attaching bolt and lift out side yoke and drive shaft as an assembly. To install, reverse removal procedure and note the following: Use care when installing assembly to prevent damage to side yoke and oil seal. Tighten all bolts to specifications
PINION FLANGE & OIL SEAL
Removal - Drain gear oil from differential, then raise and support rear of vehicle. Disconnect propeller shaft from pinion flange. Measure and record turning torque of pinion flange. Hold pinion flange with suitable tool (298421600), then remove pinion nut. Extract pinion flange with suitable puller. Remove oil seal.
Installation - Apply chassis grease betwen oil seal lips, then install oil seal using suitable drift (298411600). Install pinion flange. Hold flange with suitable tool and tighten nut until turning torque is same as recorded before removal. Install the remaining components in reverse of disassembly procedures.

DIFFERENTIAL ASSEMBLY

Removal - Raise and support rear of vehicle. Drain gear oil. Remove exhaust pipe, muffler, propeller shaft and drive shafts. Support axle assembly with a jack, then remove nuts on mounting member. Remove two bolts retaining front end of differential carrier. Lower jack and remove axle assembly
Installation - To install, reverse removal procedure and note the following: Tighten bolts to specifications and fill unit with gear oil.
OVERHAUL
DRIVE SHAFT
NOTE - Drive shaft should be disassembled only to lubricate ball spline

Disassembly - Hold drive shaft in a vise and remove rubber boot. Remove snap ring and stopper, then disassemble ball spline. Remove snap ring, needle bearing and universal joint. 
Inspection - Check rubber boot and oil seals for damage and replace as necessary. Inspect drive shaft for straightness, cracks, damage and distortion. Replace drive shaft if ball spline portion is worn or damaged. Check drive shaft play at ball spline and free play of needle bearing. Maximum play of ball spline is .04" (1 mm).
Reassembly - To reassemble, reverse disassembly procedure and note the following: Apply grease to points shown in Fig. 6. Install rubger boot and adjust drive shaft length to 13.15" (334 mm). Adjust axial play to within .0008" (.02 mm) by selecting proper size snap ring. Tighten all bolts to specification
AXLE ASSEMBLY
Disassembly - 1) Mount axle assembly on suitable holding fixture, then remove axle assembly cover plate. Using suitable puller, remove side retainers. NOTE - Mark side retainers for reassembly reference; left and right retainers are not interchangeable. Remove differential case assembly from carrier.
2) If side bearings are to be replaced, remove bearing outer races from side retainers using a suitable puller.
3) drive pinion from carrier and remove rear bearing inner race, bearing spacer and adjusting washer.
4) Remove oil seal. Remove pilot bearing together with pilot bearing spacer and front bearing inner race, Press rear bearing inner race from drive pinion. Using suitable drift, remove front and rear bearing outer race.
5) To disassemble differential case, use suitable puller and remove side bearings. NOTE - Keep left and right side bearings separate, they are not interchangeable. Remove ring gear by unfolding lock strap and loosening bolts. Unstake pinion shaft lock pin and punch out pin from flange side.
6) Remove pinion shaft, pinion gears, side gears and thrust washers. NOTE - Mark gears and thrust washers for installation in their original position. Thoroughly clean and inspect all parts for wear or damage and replace as necessary.
REASSEMBLY & ADJUSTMENT

Differential Case Assembly - 1) Assemble pinion gears side gears and thrust washers in original positions in differential case. Fit pinion shaft to differential case so that it aligns with lock pin holes.
2) Adjust clearance between differential case and back of side gear to .004-.008" (.1-.2 mm) by selecting proper thrust washer. Thrust washer are available in the following sizes: .030-.032" (.75-.80 mm), .032-.034 (.80-.85 mm) and .034-.036" (.85-.90 mm).
3) Install pinion shaft lock pin and lock in place on both sides. Apply gear oil to gear tooth surface and thrust surfaces and make sure gears rotate smoothly.
4) Install ring gear on differential case and install bolts and new lock washers.
NOTE - Tighten ring gear bolts diagonally while tapping around bolt heads with a hammer.

5) When replacing side bearings, measure bearing width by using a weight block of approximately 5.5 lb. (2.5 kg). Standard bearing width is .787" (20 mm). Press side bearing inner race onto differential case and bearing outer race into side retainers. Install new oil seal on side retainer and apply grease to cavity between seal lips.
Drive Pinion Bearing Preload Adjustment - 1) Press front and rear outer races into carrier. Install dummy pinion shaft (389501600) with rear bearing and pinion depth washer into the carrier
NOTE - If ring and pinion gear tooth contact pattern show normal pattern, reuse original washer.
2) Install preload adjusting spacer and washer, front bearing inner race, dummy collar (389501600), companion flange and nut onto dummy shaft. Do not install oil seal. Rotate pinion hand until it is seated.
3) Tighten nut to specified torque. CAUTION - Do not exceed specified preload torque. Using an inch pound torque wrench, check rotating torque of pinion shaft. If preload is not within specification, select the correct washer and spacer so that specified preload is obtained when nut is tightened to correct torque.
NOTE - Spacers are available in lengths from 2.213" (56.2 mm) to 2.252" (57.2 mm) in increments of .008" (.20 mm) and washers are available in thicknesses from .1020" (2.59 mm) to .0909" (2.31 mm) in increments .008" (.20 mm)

Drive Pinion Gear Installed Height - Leave dummy drive pinion shaft installed (See Preload Adjustment) and install height gauge (398501600). Measure clerance between end of pinion gear head and height gauge using a feeler gauge. Determine the thickness of the pinion height adjusting washer to be installed, using the following formula:
                T = To + N - (H x .01) + (D x .01) + (S x .01) - .20
NOTE - Formula values are given in millimeters.
   T = Thickness of adjusting washer needed.
   To = Thickness of washer temporarily installed.
   N = Clearance between gauge and dummy shaft.
   H = Figure marked on drive pinion head.
   D = Figure marked on dummy shaft.
   S =  Figure marked on height gauge.
NOTE - If there is no mark on gauge (S), it means that figure is zero.

2) After determining the correct thickness of required pinion height adjusting washer, remove dummy shaft and height gauge. Install pinion height adjusting washer on drive pinion, then press rear bearing inner race into position with suitable tool (398511600).
3) Insert drive pinion into gear carrier. Install previously selected preload adjusting spacer, washer, oil seal, companion flange, and pinion nut. Tighten pinion nut to specification.
Side Bearing Preload - 1) Use the follwing formula to obtain the proper thickness of left and right side retainer shims.
T1 (Left) = (A+C+G - D - E+H) x .01 + .76 (mm)
T2 (Right) = (B+D+G - F - H) x .01 + .76 (mm)
T1 = Required thickness of left side retainer Shim.
T2 = Required thickness of right side retainer shim.
A & B = Figure marked on gear carrier.
C & D = Figure marked on differential case.
E & F = Difference in width of left or right bearing.
G = Figure marked on side retainer.
H = Figure marked on drive gear.

NOTE - If the figure is not marked, regard as zero.
2) Install differential case assembly into differential carrier in reverse order of disassembly. Fit selected shims and "O" ring on the side retainer and install retainers in carrier with arrow pointing as shown in Fig. 11.
3) Measure drive gear-to-drive pinion backlash. If reading is not within specification, correct by decreasing the shim thickness on one side and increasing the shim thickness on other side the same amount. Total shim thickness must be the same to maintain proper preload.

Subaru 1975-76 Wheel Alignment Guide

1975-76 SUBARU SPECIFICATIONS AND ADJUSTMENTS

TIRE INFLATION (COLD)
Before attempting to check or adjust wheel alignment, make sure tires are properly inflated. Refer to manufacturers specifications given in owner's manual.

RIDING HEIGHT (REAR)
Riding height is adjusted by changing the size of the angle between trailing arm center line and the markings on outer bracket (see illustration). The trailing arm and outer bracket have full serrations around the torsion bar mounting hole, while the torsion bar has one missing serration, thus allowing torsion bar to be inserted at any angle.
Raising vehicle height is accomplished by turning outer end and inner end of torsion bar in direction opposite to cast-in arrow on outer end of bar. Height changes 20" (5mm) per each serration shifted.

1) Initial set vehicle rear riding height by inserting torsion bar with its missing serration aligned with markings on outer bracket surface and trailing arm inner surface. This will give approximately the specified riding height (see table).
2) Measure road clearance from center of trailing arm bushing to ground. NOTE - Vehicle must be in unloaded condition. Raise rear of vehicle and remove rear wheel.
3) Unscrew shock absorber lower mounting nut and remove it from trailing arm. Unscrew lock bolt on outer bushing.
4) Scribe mark position of torsion bar by making a mark on upper half of inner end surface and lower half of outer end surface. Outer end surface mark should be continued onto trailing arm shaft and outer bracket boss.
5) Holding arm so torsion bar does not twist, disengage serrations by tapping inner end surface of torsion bar (see illustration).
6) Pull torsion bar out of trailing arm. Determine amount of turn necessary to make proper height adjustment and turn inner end of torsion bar to this value. Then, insert outer end of torsion bar to its proper adjusted position.

7) Install rear wheel and lower vehicle. Reattach lower end of shock absorber. Recheck vehicle rear ground clearance as originally measured. If correct, tighten lock bolt on outer trailing arm bushing. If incorrect, repeat adjustment.

CASTER
Caster angle is not adjustable. If angle is not to specifications inspect suspension for wear or damage and repair or replace components as necessary.

Camber angle is not adjustable. If angle is not to specifications inspect suspension for wear or damage and repair or replace components as necessary.

TOE-IN
All Models (Front) - If toe-in is not within specifications loosen steering link (tie rod) lock nut and turn sleeve until correct toe-in is obtained.

All Models (Rear) - If toe-in is not within specifications, loosen bolts holding torsion bar bushing to body. Bushing is fixed to body at elongated holes. Moving bushing forward decreases toe-in and moving it rearward increases toe-in.

2) Measure road clearance from center of trailing arm bushing to ground NOTE - Vehicle must be in unloaded condition. Raise rear of vehicle and remove rear wheel.
3) Unscrew shock absorber lower mounting nut and remove from trailing arm. Unscrew lock bolt on outer bushing.
4) Scribe mark position of torsion bar by making a mark on upper half of inner end surface and lower half of outer end surface. Outer end surface mark should be continued onto trailing arm shaft and outer bracket boss.
5) Holding trailing arm so torsion bar does not twist, disengage serrations by tapping inner end surface of torsion bar. (see illustration)
6) Pull torsion bar out of trailing arm. Determine amount of turn necessary to make proper height adjustment and turn inner end of torsion bar to this value. Then, insert outer end of torsion bar to its proper adjusted position.
7) Install rear wheel and lower vehicle. Reattach lower end of shock absorber. Recheck vehicle rear ground clearance in originally measured. If correct, tighten lock bolt on outer trailing arm bushing. If incorrect, repeat adjustment.


CASTER
Caster angle is not adjustable. If angle is not to specifications inspect suspension for wear or damage and repair or replace components as necesary.

CAMBER

Subaru 1970-72 Wheel Alignment Repair Guide

1970-72 SUBARU SPECIFICATIONS AND ADJUSTMENTS

TIRE PRESSURE (COLD)
Before attempting to check or adjust wheel alignment, ensure that tires are properly inflated.


RIDING HEIGHT
1100 Front (1970-71) & 1300 Front (1971) - With vehicle on level ground, check riding height from center of the lower arm to floor. Measurement should be 8.94" to 9.33". To adjust, use suitable tool (925041000) and rotate adjusting cam (access to cam through opening front grill) clockwise to increase or counterclockwise to decrease riding height to specifications.
1100 & 1300 Station Wagon Rear (1971) - With vehicle on level ground, measure rear riding height from center of torsion bar to floor. Measurement should read 13.0" to 13.4". Adjustment is made from inside of trunk by turning center arm adjusting bolt which is built into the crossmember.
All Other Models Rear (1970-72) -
 1) If riding height dimension between level floor and center of torsion bar at outer end is not within specifications, adjustment is required.
2) Jack up rear of vehicle and remove rear wheels.
3) Remove nut holding lower end of shock absorber and remove from trailing arm while pushing up the trailing arm.
4) Loosen lock bolt on outer bushing of torsion bar and mark both end surfaces of torsion bar and on end surface of trailing arm shaft and outer bracket boss. Markings should be made on upper part of inner end, and lower part of outer end.
5) Hold trailing arm so torsion bar will not twist and disengage serrations of bar by tapping inner end surface of torsion bar. NOTE - Do not damage serrations during this procedure.
6) Vehicle height is raised by turning torsion bar in opposite direction to arrow mark on outer end surface of torsion bar. Reverse direction lowers vehicle height. The changing rate of vehicle height is .20" per tooth shifted. Adjust only inner end serrations by turning torsion bar after assuring that bar has been pulled out of trailing arm. Then insert outer end serrations into outer bracket boss by lining up trailing arm.
7) Install rear wheels and secure lower end of shock absorber.
8) Check vehicle height and if within specifications tighten lock bolt on outer bushing 13.0 to 18.1 ft. lbs.

CASTER
1300 & 1400 (1972) - Caster is nonadjustable. If alignment is not within specifications, inspect suspension for damage to crossmember, transverse link and body or improper installation of suspension parts. Replace with new parts or perform proper installation where necessary.
1100 (1970-71) & 1300 (1971) - If caster is not within specifications adjust by rotating caster adjusting cam until within specifications. Cam is located on lower arm next lower arm shaft.

CAMBER
1300 & 1400 (1972) - Camber is nonadjustable. If alignment is not within specifications, check for damage to suspension parts or improper installation of parts.
1100 (1970-71) & 1300 (1971) - If camber is not within specifications, adjust by rotating camber adjusting cam until within specifications. Cam is located on lower arm next to ball joint.
All Models Rear (1970-72) - Camber is adjusted by changing shims which are inserted between torsion bar inner bushing and body of vehicle. Adding shims decreases camber angle and removing shims increases angle. Adjustment procedure same for both wheels.

TOE-IN
All Models Front (1970-72) - If toe-in is not within specifications loosen tie rod lock nuts. Adjust by turning tie rod until readings are within specifications. Tighten lock nuts.
All Models Rear (1970-72) - If toe-in not within specifications, loosen bolts holding torsion bar bushing to body. Bushing is fixed to body at elongated holes and moving bushing forward decreases toe-in. To increase toe-in, move bushing towards rear of vehicle. Tighten bolts and recheck toe-in.

1965 Import Vehicles Ball Joint Checking Guide

ARROW / COLT

All Models - With components removed from control arm and ball joint still installed, check following: Horizontal and vertical free play (0"), and ball joint rotation starting torque 4-6 ft. lbs. (6-8Nm). Replace ball joints if correct specifications are not obtained

AUDI

Fox - Clearance of ball joint with pressure applied by leverage should be .04-.10" (1.0-2.5 mm). if not replace ball joints

BMW

All Models - With lower control arm removed, measure axial (up and down) movement of ball joint stud. If movement exceeds .0945", replace ball joint.

COURIER

All Models - Check working surfaces of ball joints and studs for wear or damage. End play should not exceed .031" (.8 mm), if end play is excessive, replace ball joint.

DATSUN

All Models (Exc. 620 Pickup) - Remove lower control arm. Use appropriate spring tension gauge and and attach it to top of ball joint stud nut. Measure force (INCH Lbs.) required to move ball joint stud laterally. If measurement is not within specifications, replace ball joint


FIAT

All Models - With vehicle raised and supported under lower control arms, grasp wheel at top and bottom and try to shake wheel. If any movement is noted, control arm must be removed for further inspection.

HONDA

All Models - Raise and support front of vehicle. Attach dial indicator onto lower control arm with indicator tip on steering knuckle near ball joint. Place pry bar between lower control arm and steering knuckle. NOTE - Take care not to damage ball joint rubber boot. Push on pry bar and observe movement on dial indicator. If movement is in excess of .020" (.5 mm), ball joint must be replaced.

JAGUAR

All Models - Upper ball joint must be replaced if signs of wear or play are evident. The lower ball joint is adjustable with shims if axial play exceeds .004-.006" (.10-.15 mm). Shims must not be removed to take excessive wear in ball pin and socket. If parts are excessively worn, replacement is required.

LANCIA

All Models - if ball joint shows excessive amounts of wear (play) replace ball joints.

LUV

With vehicle raised and supported under lower control arms, grasp wheel at top and bottom. Try to move wheel and replace ball joint if movement exceeds .06" (1.52 mm).

MAZDA

All Models - Check ball joint dust seal for wear or damage and if necessary, replace seal. Ball joint end play must not exceed .039" (1 mm). If end play exceeds specifications, replace ball joint

MERCEDES-BENZ

There should be no lateral movement of ball joint. Vertical movement is adjusted by adding or removing washers.

OPEL

All Models - Raise and support front of vehicle. Inspect ball joint rubber boots for damage and replace as necessary. If lower ball joint axial play exceeds .008" (2 mm), ball joint must be replaced.

PEUGEOT

All Models - When moving ball pin some friction torque should be felt. If ball pin can be moved without resistance end play is shown, replace ball joint.

RENAULT

All Models - Inspect ball joints for wear or excessive play. Replace ball joints as necessary.

SAAB

All Models - if ball joint exhibits excessive play, it must be replaced as a complete unit.

SUBARU

All Models - Check ball joint for excessive play by pushing and pulling on ball joint stud. Allowable looseness is less than .012". If play exceeds this specification, ball joint must be replaced.

TOYOTA

Corona and Pickup - To check lower ball joint, jack up lower suspension arm and check for ball joint looseness by moving wheel vertically and horizontally. Movement limit in vertical direction should be less than .04" (1 mm) Corona and .20" (5.0 mm) Pickup. Movement limit in horizontal direction should be less than .08" (2 mm). Corona and .09" (2.3 mm) Pickup.
NOTE -  Ensure other suspension parts are tight before checking ball joints. To check upper ball joints. disconnect upper suspension arm from steering knuckle. Turn ball stud and check for excessive looseness or tightness. Replace ball joint if it is excessively loose or tight.

All Other Models - Check for excessive looseness, proper operation and damaged ball stud. Replace as necessary.

TRIUMPH

All Models - Inspect ball joints for excessive wear or play. Replace ball joint as necessary.

VOLKSWAGEN

Type 1 - Raise front of behicle and turn steering to one side. Place pry bar tool over nut or bolt head mounting steering knucle to strut. Compress ball joint spring and place vernier caliper over top of ball joint and over bottom stud. Note caliper reading, then release lever and record caliper travel. Increase reading is ball joint play. Replace ball joints as necessary

Type 2 - Raise front of vehicle and turn steering to one side. Insert pry bar tool VW 281a (or equivalent) under lower control arm and over top of strut mounting. Fit a vernier caliper on lower or upper torsion arm and steering knuckle. Record measurement. Press down with lever and measure travel of vernier caliper. IF travel exceeds specifications, replace ball joint.

All Other Models - Raise and support, then turn steering to one side. Install suitable levering tool so that ball joint spirng may be compressed. With spring compressed, position a vernier caliper with lower jaw on ball joint stud and upper jaw on top of clamping bolt for ball joint stud. Note reading. Slowly release tension from spring and not travel of caliper. This reading indicates ball joint play. If specified play is exceeded replace ball joint.

VOLVO

All Models - Maximum permitted axial play for lower ball joint is 12" (3 mm). Check ball joint by prying back and forth with a bar. If specifications are exceeded, replace ball joints.

1975 Vehicles Ball Joint Checking

ALFA ROMEO
All Models - Check working surfaces of ball pins and their seats, and ball joint studs for damage or wear. Axial play should not exceed specifications (.04"). Replace complete ball joint unit when indicated

BMW
All Models - With lower control arm removed, measure axial (up and down) movement of ball joint stud. If movement exceeds .0945", replace ball joint.

COLT
All Models - With components removed from control arm and ball joint still installed, check the following: Horizontal and vertical free play (0") and ball joint rotation starting torque 4-7 ft. lbs. (.6-1.0 mkg). Replace ball joints if correct specifications are not obtained

COURIER
All Models - Check working surfaces of ball joints and studs for wear or damage. End play should not exceed .031" (.8mm). If end play is excessive, replace ball joint.

DATSUN
All Models (Exc. 620 Pickup) - Remove lower control arm. Measure axial movement by lifting and depressing ball joint stud. Difference between these two measurements is axial movement. Using suitable spring tension gauge attached to top of ball joint stud measure force (INCH lbs.) required to move ball joint stud laterally. If either measurement is not within specifications, replace ball joint.

FIAT
All Models - With vehicle raised and supported under lower control arms, grasp wheel at top and bottom and try to shake wheel. If any movement is noted, control arm must be removed for further inspection

HONDA
All Models - Raise and support front of vehicle. Attach dial indicator onto lower control arm with indicator tip on steering knuckle near ball joint. Place pry bar between lower control arm and steering knuckle.

JAGUAR
All Models - Upper ball joint must be replaced. If signs of wear or play are evident. The lower ball joint is adjustable with shims if axial play exceeds .004-.006" (.10-.15 mm). Shims must not be removed to take up excessive wear in ball pin and socket. If parts are excessively worn, replacement is required.

LUV
With vehicle raised and supported under lower control arms, grasp wheel at top and bottom. Try to shake wheel and if any movement is noted, inspect front suspension for wear or damage.

MAZDA
All Models - Check ball joint dust seal for wear or damage and, if necessary, replace seal. Ball joint end play must not exceed .039" (1 mm). If end play exceeds specifications, replace ball joint.

OPEL
All Models - Raise and support front of vehicle. Inspect ball joint rubber boots for damage and replace as necessary. Using suitable gauge (J-23745) measure axial play. If axial play is more than .080" (2 mm), ball joint must be replaced.

PEUGEOT
All Models - Inspect ball joints for roughness or excessive wear. Replace ball joints as necessary.

PORSCHE
All Models - When moving ball pin some friction torque should be felt. If ball pin can be moved without resistance and end play is shown, replace ball joint.

RENAULT
All Models - Inspect ball joints for wear or excessive play. Replace ball joint as necessary.

SAAB
All Models - If ball joint exhibits excessive play, it must be replaced as a complete unit.

SUBARU
All Models - Check ball joint for excessive play by pushing and pulling on ball joint stud. Allowance loosness is less than .012". If play exceeds this specification, ball joint must be replaced.

Wheel Bearing Adjustment Guide

ALFA ROMEO
All Models - While rotating hub, tighten spindle nut to 18 ft. lbs. Loosen nut, then retighten to 7 ft. lbs. Back off on nut 1/4 turn and install cotter key. If slot in spindle nut does not align with hole in spindle, tighten nut until it is possible to insert cotter key. After cotter key is installed, ensure that bearing retainer plate can be easily rotated by insterting a screwdriver in plate holes

AUDI
NOTE - The following procedure can only be performed using special tools indicated.

Model 100 (Front) - 1) Raise and support front of vehicle. Remove lower wheel bolt and replace with special wheel bolt adapter (V-104) and special dial indicator (G-43). By means of retaining screw on special tool (V1-104), adjust dial indicator to pretensioned position of 1 millimeter.

2) Grasp wheel at front and rear. First push inward on front while pulling outward on rear, record dial indicator reading. Reverse this procedure and record dial indicator reading. Difference between these two readings is wheel bearing play. If play exceeds .04-.07 mm, adjustment will be necessary.

3.) Remove cotter pin and castle nut. If there was too much play, tighten spindle nut until play is within specifications. If there was insufficient play, remove wheel, spindle nut and its shim. Replace and tighten spindle nut. Using 1 millimeter feeler gauge, loosen spindle nut until it is possible to insert feeler gauge between spindle nut and wheel hub. Attach special hub puller (V-26) and withdraw hub until it is firmly in contact with spindle nut. Remove puller and retighten spindle nut until it is within specifications

Model 100 (Rear) - Raise and support rear of vehicle. Remove grease cup and one wheel bolt. Attach special dial indicator (30-43), using wheel bolt adapter (40-104) and attachment (10-22). Dial indicator activator foot should be pretensioned to 1 millimeter against the stub axle. Grasp wheel at front and rear. Move wheel on horizontal axis. If reading on dial indicator is not .02-.04mm, adjustment will be necessary. Adjust by loosening or tightening spindle nut

NOTE - Fox front wheel bearing is not adjustable. Torque stub axle nut to 13 ft. lbs.

Fox (Rear) - Remove grease cup, cotter pin and castle nut. Tighten spindle nut and loosen for adjustment. Adjust by lightly tightening spindle nut until plain washer (beneath spindle nut) can just be moved from side to side, using screwdriver. Thin adjustment will correspond to .0012-.0027" (.03-06 mm) wheel bearing play.

AUSTIN
Austin Marina - Raise and support vehicle so that front wheel is not touching ground. Remove grease cup and attach suitable magnetic base dial indicator with base on brake drum and actuating foot touching spindle. Bearing wobble should be from .001-.005". If adjustment is required remove cotter pin and slacken castle nut. Torque castle nut to 5ft lb. while spinning wheel. Stop wheel, slacken castle nut, and retighten castle nut, finger tight only. Reinstall cotter pin. NOTE - At minimum end-float figure given a considerable amount of movement will  be felt in the front wheel. Do not reduce end-float below .001".

BMW
2002 Models - While rotating wheel hub, tighten castle nut to 22-24 ft. lbs., then rotate hub at least two more times. Loosen castle nut until bearing end play is noticed. Tighten castle nut to maximum of 2.2 ft. lbs., then loosen nut to nearest hole an install cotter key. NOTE - After adjustment, slotted washer should move easily, without noticeable resistance.

3.0 Si and 530 i Models - While rotating wheel hub, tighten castle nut to 7 ft. lbs. Loosen castle nut approximately 1/4 turn. Insert screwdriver in recess of bearing retainer washer and ensure washer can be rotated easily. Install suitable gauge holder (BMW 00 2 500) on wheel hub and install dial indicator with tip touching front axle stub. Move wheel hub back and forth several times and check bearing end play. Adjust castle nut until bearing end play is .0008-.0024". NOTE - Set bearing end play as close to lowest limit as possible. Install cotter key.

CAPRI
All Models - Rotate wheel, hub and drum assembly while turning adjusting nut to 17-25 ft. lbs. Back off nut one-half turn. Retighten adjusting nut to 10-15 INCH lbs. Reinstall cotter pin and check front wheel rotation

COLT
All Models - Tighten adjusting nut to 14.5 ft. lbs. After seating bearing components, loosen nut to 0 ft. lbs. Now make final adjustment to 3.6 ft. lbs. After installing lock cap, insert cotter pin. NOTE - Do not loosen adjusting nut more than 15 degrees to align spindle holes.

COURIER
All models - While rotating wheel, hub and drum assembly, tighten adjusting nut to 17-25 ft. lbs. Back adjusting nut off 1/2 turn and retighten nut to 6-8 ft. lbs. Install new cotter key and check wheel rotation.

DATSUN
All models - Tighten spindle nut to torque specifications in following table. Spin wheel and retorque spindle nut. Loosen nut according to specifications in following table and then tighten to align cotter key hole. Insert cotter pin.

Model 124 and 131 - While rotating hub, torque spindle nut to 14.5 ft. lbs. Completely loosen nut and retighten to 5 ft. lbs. Loosen nut 30 Degrees and stake collar of spindle nut into machined slot on spindle. Attach dial indicator with magnetic base on brake drum and actuating foot on spindle. Hub end play should not exceed .004". NOTE - When ever spindle nut has been removed it must be replaced with a new nut.

FIAT (Cont.)
Models 128 and X 1/9 - Tighten front and rear spindle nuts to 112 ft. lbs. When spindle nuts are properly tightened, stake collar of spindle nut into machined slot on spindle.

HONDA
All Models (Front) - Front wheel bearings are not adjustable. Torque front spindle nut to 87-130 ft. lbs. (Civic CVCC)

JAGUAR
All Models - While rotating hub, tighten nut until no end play is evident. Loosen nut 1 or 2 flats to line up cotter key and install cotter key. End play should be measured with a dial indicator and should be .002-.006". If not within specifications, adjust axle nut to correct end play.

LUV
All Models - While rotating wheel, tighten spindle nut to 22 ft. lbs. Turn hub through two or three turns and loosen nut until just finger tight. Check free play. Using a pull scale attached to wheel stud, measure turning torque; adjust nut until pull recorded on scale is 1.1 to 1-2.6 lbs. when wheel begins to rotate.

MAZDA
All Models - With vehicle raised and supported under lower control arms, measure amount of bearing preload using a pull scale hooked on hub bolt. Preload should be 1.3-2.4 lbs. (81600) or .9-2.2 lbs. (all other models). If not to specifications, adjust by tightening spindle nut until correct bearing preload is obtained. Align slot of spindle nut with hole in spindle and install new cotter key.

MERCEDES-BENZ
All Models - While rotating hub, tighten clamping nut until hub can just be turned. Loosen clamping nut and release bearing tension by striking steering knuckle spindle with plastic hammer. Using a suitable dial indicator, check wheel bearing end play. End play should be .0004-.0008". Adjust clamping nut until end play is within limits. Tighten socket bolt of clamping nut. Washer between outer bearing and clamping nut should rotate with light pressure applied to it.

MG
Midget - Raise front of vehicle and remove each wheel. Remove caliper assembly, but do not disconnect hydraulic brake hose. Support caliper to prevent damage to hose. Attach suitable dial indicator and measure runout of hub at outer edge of brake rotor. If runout exceeds .006" remove rotor and reposition on hub. Torque spindle nut to 46 ft lbs. and recheck runout.

MGB and MGB/GT - Raise front of vehicle and remove fron wheels. Using suitable dial indicator, measure hub end play. Correct end play is .002-.004". If not within specifications, remove spindle nut, washer and outer bearing. Add or remove shims behind outer bearing, until correct end play is obtained with spindle nut torqued to 40-70 ft. lbs.

OPEL
All Models - Raise and support front of vehicle. While rotating wheel, torque spindle nut to 18 ft. lbs. Back off spindle nut 1/4 turn. If slot in spindle nut and hole in spindle do not align, back off nut until they are aligned and insert cotter pin. Properly adjusted wheel bearing will exhibit small amount of end play

PEUGEOT
All Models - While turning wheel tighten spindle nut to 22 ft. lbs. Loosen and retorque nut to 7 ft. lbs. Lock nut in this position by staking nut collar into slot of spindle.

PORSCHE
All Models - Turn wheel and tighten clamping nut just enough to seat roller bearings. Loosen until tab washer can be easily moved in a lateral direction (by means of screwdriver) and no perceptible bearing play is felt when hub is moved axially. Tighten screw on clamping nut to specified torque and recheck adjustment.

RENAULT
All Models (Front) - Front wheel bearings are not adjustable. Torque front spindle nut to 145 ft. lbs.

All Models (Rear) - Install washer and lock nut. Tighten lock nut to 36 ft. lbs. (5 mkg) to seat bearings. Loosen lock nut completely, then tighten nut to 1.4-2.9 ft. lbs. (.2-.4 mkg) and lock nut in place by bending flange into slot of lock nut.

SUBARU
All Models (Front) - Front wheel bearing is not adjustable. Tighten spindle nut to 174 ft. lbs.

4WD Station Wagon (Rear) - Rear wheel bearings are not adjustable. Tighten spindle lock nut to 145 - 181 ft. lbs.
